Siding Cleaning Guide: Composite Cladding, Fiber Cement & Wood

Maintaining the appearance and durability of your siding is crucial, but cleaning and care requirements vary depending on the siding material. In this article, we’ll explore how to maintain three popular siding options: ASCEND Composite Cladding, fiber cement siding, and traditional wood siding.

ASCEND Composite Cladding

While installation of Alside’s ASCEND Composite Cladding is a breeze for builders and remodelers, cleaning it is even simpler for the homeowner. While regular rainfall helps keep it clean, occasionally rinsing ASCEND Composite Cladding with a garden hose is recommended. To remove stubborn dirt, follow these instructions on a cooler overcast day (55°F–75°F) for best results:

  1. Use a long-handled, soft-bristled brush attached to the hose
  2. For stubborn dirt, create a cleaning solution of 1/3 cup powdered detergent (Tide®, Fab® or equivalent powder detergent), 2/3 cup household cleaner (SoilMax®, Spic & Span® or equivalent) and 1 gallon of water
  3. For mildew, substitute 1 quart of laundry bleach for 1 quart of water
  4. Start at the bottom of the house and work your way up, rinsing as you go to help avoid streaks

Fiber Cement Siding

Cleaning fiber cement siding is straightforward with the right tools: a gentle cloth, a soft brush, and a garden hose. Avoid harsh brushes or sponges that could damage the finish. Here’s how to do it:

  1. If using a brush, start by removing surface dust, then rinse with a hose
  2. Alternatively, lightly dampen a cloth and follow the siding’s grain
  3. Always finish with a thorough rinse using clean water

Wood Siding

Wood siding exudes timeless charm but requires special care. Keep an eye out for signs of rot or decay, and address these issues promptly to preserve the wood siding’s beauty and lifespan. To keep the wooden siding looking its best, follow these care instructions:

  1. Begin by clearing loose dirt and debris with a gentle brush or broom
  2. Mix a mild detergent or wood cleaner per the manufacturer’s instructions
  3. Apply the solution gently with a soft brush or sponge to protect the wood’s integrity
  4. Thoroughly rinse with water, ensuring no cleaning solution remains
